Privacy policy

Land Mapper (“the app”) helps you measure land, print its plan and find your way to it. This policy explains what information the app uses and where it goes. In short: your land files stay on your phone. The app checks in with our server so we can manage trials, subscriptions and app versions (see “App check-in”). Only if you choose to publish a land, share one by link or use chat does land information go online, under an anonymous ID. There is no advertising, no analytics in the app, and we do not sell any data.

Information stored on your device

Land names and notes, corner coordinates, areas, paths you record, landmarks, photos you take or choose, and camera links you add are saved only in the app's storage on your phone. If you use Backup, a copy is also written to the Documents/LandMapper folder on your phone. We (the developer) do not receive this information.

On Android, app data may be included in your phone's own Google backup if you have turned that on. That backup is controlled by your Google account and settings, not by us.

Location

The app uses your phone's precise location only while it is open, to capture land corners, show where you are on the map, record paths and guide you to your land. It does not use location in the background.

App PIN, fingerprint and face unlock

The 4-digit PIN you choose at setup opens the app. It never leaves your phone: only a scrambled (salted and hashed) form is kept, in the phone's secure hardware storage (Android Keystore / iOS Keychain). If you turn on fingerprint or face unlock, your phone does the check and only tells the app whether it succeeded. The app never receives, stores or sends your fingerprint or face data. Your online account key is also kept in the phone's secure storage.

Camera and photos

The camera is used only when you choose to take a photo of your land or a landmark. Photos stay on your phone.

Online services the app contacts

To work, the app requests information from the services below. Like any website, they receive your phone's internet (IP) address and the information listed, under their own privacy policies:

  • Map pictures: OpenStreetMap and Esri World Imagery receive the map area you are viewing.
  • Route finding: when you tap “Take me there” while online, your current location and the land's location are sent to the OpenStreetMap routing service (routing.openstreetmap.de) to calculate routes.
  • Live cameras: the app connects to camera links you add yourself.
  • Links you tap: Google Maps, Google Earth and Copernicus Browser open only when you tap them, with the land's location.

App check-in

When the app starts (and every few hours while it is open and online) it tells our server that this copy is in use. It sends: a random install ID, a scrambled (hashed) formof the phone's app device ID (the ID itself never leaves the phone), the phone make and model, the Android/iOS version, the app version and whether it is a test or store copy. Our hosting provider tells us the country and state the connection comes from; we do not store your IP address and we never use GPS for this.

We use this to run free trials (one per phone), manage subscriptions, tell old versions to update, show notices, and switch off copies that are misused or whose test period has ended. It is linked to your anonymous account. The app's lands, locations and photos are not part of the check-in.

Online land registry and chat (optional)

The first time the app goes online it creates an anonymous account: a random ID such as “Mapper-7F3K2Q” and a secret key kept on your phone. Mapping and viewing the map never require your name, email or phone number.

  • Publishing a land(only when you tap Publish) stores online: its outline (corner coordinates), area, the date it was first mapped, its on-site evidence score and your anonymous ID. Anyone using the app near that place can see this outline as “already mapped”. The land's name, notes, photos, markers and paths are not published.
  • Looking up nearby lands sends the area of the map you are viewing (a box around your land or position) to get the outlines published there.
  • Chat: contact requests and messages you send are stored online so the other person can read them. Other users see only your anonymous ID. Reports you make about a user are stored so they can be reviewed.
  • Contact details: when you first set up the app we ask for your name and a phone number and/or email address, to register you. They are encrypted before being stored online and are never shown to other users. Only the app's owner can see them, in a private administration page, to support you, manage your plan or trial, and match your copy of the app to you. We use them only to make sure there is a real, reachable person behind each account, public land record and chat, to contact you about your account, your plan, a report or a dispute, and (in future) to verify your number or email and recover your account. We never sell them or share them for advertising. A copy is also kept in your phone's secure storage, so you can prove it's you if you forget your app PIN. We record when you agreed and to which version of this policy.

This information is stored with our hosting provider (Cloudflare). A published outline is a record of where someone mapped, not proof of ownership. You can remove a land from the registry at any time, or delete your whole online account (published lands and chats) in Settings → “Delete my online data”.

Sharing

Land information leaves your phone only when you choose to share it, for example with “Send location”, “Back up as a file” or “Print plan”, and only to the app or person you pick.

Share land(share by link) stores a copy of the land's outline, size, markers, footpaths and evidence score (not photos) on our server, so the people you send the link to can open it. We record which anonymous accounts opened it and how often, so the limits you chose can be applied. The copy stays until you delete your account; after it expires or you withdraw it, nobody can open it.

Why we may use your information (legal basis) and for how long

Contact details are processed with your consent, given when you save them, and to provide the registry and chat you asked to use. The app check-in is based on our legitimate interest in running trials and subscriptions, keeping the app up to date and preventing misuse; check-in records are deleted 24 months after the copy was last seen. Published lands, shared lands, chats and contact details are kept while your online account exists. You can remove them at any time (see below); we then delete them from our live database. Reports about abuse may be kept for as long as needed to deal with them.

Your rights

Under the data protection law that applies to you (for example the UK/EU GDPR, the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, Kenya's Data Protection Act 2019 or South Africa's POPIA), you can: see and download the information we hold about you (Settings → My details → “Download all my online data”); correct it (edit My details); withdraw consent and remove your contact details (“Remove my contact details”); delete your whole online account (Settings → “Delete my online data”; the check-in record of the phone is then kept without any link to you, so the free trial is not given twice); object to the check-in by writing to us; and complain to the data protection authority in your country.

Deleting your data

Delete a single item inside the app, or everything in Settings → “Delete all lands and data”. Uninstalling the app removes its data from the phone. Backup files you saved to Documents/LandMapper stay until you delete them.

Delete your online account: in the app, Settings → “Delete my online data”. Without the app, see how to delete your account or email adeyemotaofiq.uk@gmail.com.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13.
